Welcome

I never said I was an angel. Nor am I innocent or holy like the Virgin Mary. What I am is natural and serious and as sensitive as an open nerve on an ice cube. I'm a young black sister with an unselfish heart who overdosed on love long ago. My closest friends consider me soft-spoken. Others say I have a deadly tongue. And while it's true that I have a spicy attitude like most of the ghetto girls I know, I back it up with a quick, precise, and knowledgeable mind. My memory runs way back and I'm inclined to remind people of the things they'd most like to forget.
No disrespect
Souljah was not born to make white people feel comfortable
I am African first, I am Black first
I want what's good for me and my people first
And if my survival means your total destruction, then so be it
You built this wicked system
They say two wrongs don't make a right
But it damn sure makes things even
The Hate That Hate Produced          — Sistah Souljah No Disrespect

I am a midwestern Southern Bell who's legacy is as rich as the Delta and the Nile mixed into a lovely travestry. It has taken me a long time to discover my voice.

I finally realized that I wanted my own blog to continue to talk about Birmingham and Chicago. I wanted to talk about Latino culture and black flavor. I wanted to also discuss gossip/public intellectualism, politics, Christianity, Muslim, journalism and ethics, looksism, cooking, fiction, history, womanism, writing, race, fashion, music and other topics of interest during this rather fractious time in American life and the life of the Republic.

Finally, I would like to say that I have a patron saint of blogging, and that, for all intents and purposes, is the Six Brown Chicks.

I discovered them while watching Iyana's Fix My Life. I found it very interesting that a group of black women came together to share their personal stories of strength in the name of service with thought inspiring blogs and unforgetable live chats. Their blogs touched on love, politics, sisterhood, and so many topics.

In my view--there is nothing more beautiful than to be a Black Woman standing the present time with the ancestors smiling down on the words and actions of each of us.
